As LIT involves separation and injection of blood component (lymphocytes), establishing complete safety is important.
Local side effects : Pain, irritation, itching, redness, swelling can be encountered. These symptoms are temporary and usually do not require treatment.
Systemic side effects : No systemic long term side effects have been reported. In 2006, Kling led large European studies, each involving over 4000 patients over a three year time span using LIT techniques. No anaphylaxis, autoimmune reactions or graft versus host disease were reported.
The safety issue that is commonly raised is transmission of infections, but with complete infection profile work-up of both the partners eliminates this risk.
