Side Effects

As LIT involves separation and injection of blood component (lymphocytes), establishing complete safety is important.

  • Local side effects : Pain, irritation, itching, redness, swelling can be encountered. These symptoms are temporary and usually do not require treatment.
  • Systemic side effects : No systemic long term side effects have been reported.  In 2006, Kling led large European studies, each involving over 4000 patients over a three year time span using LIT techniques. No anaphylaxis, autoimmune reactions or graft versus host disease were reported.
  • The safety issue that is commonly raised is transmission of infections, but with complete infection profile work-up of both the partners eliminates this risk.
